Coccidiosis — what now? — Coccidiosis is an infectious disease caused by coccidia: microscopic, single-celled organisms that undergo part of their development in the intestinal cells of a host — in our case, our birds. These microorganisms multiply enormously in the intestinal cells and destroy the intestinal cells. There are many types of coccidia. They are not always pathogenic and can occur in different places in the intestine. Where the intestinal wall has been damaged by coccidia, the intestine can no longer digest food properly.
