Introduction.
The beginnings of genetics are so far behind us that it can no longer be traced. However, we can imagine that in earlier centuries people made a living from agriculture and livestock farming — however primitive by our standards. A good harvest and good livestock were, and still are, a matter of life and death. The farmers were actually at the cradle of genetics. Not consciously at first, but they soon discovered that good wheat does not grow from bad seed, and that a small and slow horse does not produce a fiery warhorse.
