The shell of a bird egg consists of lime, also called calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). The calcium content of calcium carbonate is approximately 38%. The calcium required for eggshell formation must be consumed through the feed. The hollow spaces of the leg bones contain a small amount of calcium that can be used for eggshell formation — but this is completely insufficient for several eggs.
