Birds are moulting - every bird breeder will have to deal with it sooner or later. This period falls immediately after or just after the breeding season. During the moult, all kinds of changes take place in the plumage: color, pigmentation and more. Some of these changes are important purely for the bird itself, but we as breeders and exhibitors also make use of them. For example, some outer feathers are sometimes removed, after which the new feather grows back about 6 millimeters longer — making the bird appear larger. The brown also decreases and the horny parts become darker.
