The most striking and at the same time most unique adaptation of birds for flight is undoubtedly their plumage. There is a lot to say about this subject — it could be a thesis in itself. Feathers fulfill numerous functions: insulation, aerodynamic function, communication, camouflage, sound production, hearing function, protection, hygiene, water repellency, water transport and tactile function. This large number of functions means that feathers come in all kinds of shapes and forms.
