The tracheal mite and more
The mite, Sternostoma tracheacolum, occurs in several bird species and settles in the trachea and air sacs, causing breathing difficulties. They can be recognized by a grinding sound, gurgling sound and regular shaking of the cup. Disease symptoms: The mites cause inflammation by hooking themselves with their claws in mucous membranes and blood, resulting in loss of condition, bulging of the feathers, loss of voice (in songbirds), breathing difficulties, visible gasping for air with grinding and wheezing sounds. Heavy infections can lead to deaths.
