The Fats: Part 15 all. Gils** Fats have an important function as an energy source and are therefore considered fuels. When fat is burned into water and carbon dioxide, heat and work will be released. This is used to maintain body temperature (42 C) and to provide muscular work in birds. Fat is also the carrier of fat-soluble vitamins. In addition, we find fat between the muscles, around many organs and as subcutaneous fat tissue as well as in all body cells. 1 gram of fat provides 9 calories. A limited fat reserve can be useful when temporarily no or little food is consumed due to illness.
